Busman’s Holiday, or What a Chicago Wedding Photojournalist Does for Fun

When travel arrangements were made for Emily & Stephanie’s wedding in Venice I wasn’t sure if I’d be open during the following week so my return was booked the day after. But it was beautiful in Naples, seventy degrees and no humidity, a cold front for the locals but paradise in comparison to what I had left in Chicago. So I bumped the return a couple of days, followed some advice about where to find a bit of old Florida in the vicinity and headed down to Everglade City on the southwest coast. Everglade city is an old town turned tourist to a degree, on the edge of the Big Cedar Swamp and a kind of jumping off point for forays into the Everglades farther east. But it also has some of the old character, and if nothing else doesn’t look like a theme park or subdivision that was built over a long weekend. It can be difficult to drop into an unfamiliar area and come out with really good photos in just a couple of days but I got lucky once or twice, the weather really cooperated and I had a great time exploring the area. My overall opinion of Florida has changed because of this trip, and I’d happily return to the area to photograph the exquisite natural beauty and unique coastal character. So long as it isn’t 98 in the shade. 00 Busmans Holiday, or What a Chicago Wedding Photojournalist Does for FunAlice at the historic Smallwood Store, Chokoloskee, Fla., 10,000 Islands.01 Busmans Holiday, or What a Chicago Wedding Photojournalist Does for Fun

Wedding pictures for social networking

The last couple of weddings I’ve shot have included requests from the bride and groom to supply them with images that they could post online on their facebook pages and send around to friends and family. Normally, the work I produce is posted to viewing/ordering galleries at Pictage, where my clients can easily send links to individual photos in the galleries but images can’t be right clicked and saved. With this system I can control the quality and look of my work and also the print quality, which is important to me and hopefully my clients. In many cases, once images are right clicked, saved and resized by Facebook’s program, the images really suffer in the translation and I think this is something to be avoided.  But I understand the need for immediacy and the desire to use images in a more personalized way, so I’m planning on offering copies of my corrected images which are optimized for the web.  My clients would receive access when the proofing galleries are posted, to use and distribute freely. I want my clients to not only be ecstatic about their photography, but also happy with the process of viewing, selecting, printing and distributing the pictures they love the most and want to share.

Video Shoot- Adventive Marketing, Arlington Hts., IL

This is from a shoot I did the other day for Adventive Marketing to get the wheels in motion for commercial online video presentation. Video is hot, and it was a lot of fun working with Sr. Art Director Brian Kahle on this project.  I’ve been a 100% still photographer until now, practicing an editorial style of commercial Ad photography, along with wedding photojournalism and personal work that feeds my photographic roots as a daily news photographer. But I earned my commercial spurs working with big set movie lighting  in the 80′s, and equipment is just equipment, so this isn’t a giant leap.  In the future we’ll be incorporating video clips from wedding and commercial shoots to give you a look behind the scenes. adele demo1 Video Shoot Adventive Marketing, Arlington Hts., IL
